The VIRGINIA SHOPPER is on the prowl again! Believe it or not, the object is to cool off during a rare, but unavoidable Virginia heat wave. My theory? If I think “snow” and “winter” then I will be mentally cool and composed mid-August.
In addition to thinking cool, avoiding the holiday hassle and enjoying a wonderland of perfect gifts, this mid-summer day’s dream, suddenly seemed like a brilliant idea. First of all, almost everything for winter is on sale in August, but sure to go up, up, up later. Secondly, it feels cool to shop for winter in summer. Does that make sense? And lastly, I may be DONE with holiday shopping when everyone else is frantically fighting the crowds! How cool is THAT?
Of course, Virginia Born and Bred was the first, (and as it turned out, the only) stop. There’s a big AUGUST HOLIDAY SALE going on there now, both online and off, and where I’ve already found some fantastic finds:
Aunt Millie Loves Baked Apples!
And right in front of me is the perfect gift! On sale no less! Actually, – two perfect gifts – a set of beautiful hand-crafted, hand-painted Apple Bakers designed with special center cones for even cooking. The scent of Aunt Millie’s sugar and spiced apples lingers on – of Christmas past and in anticipation of Christmas future. She’s gonna love this gift for sure. Me too
Friend, Peggy is a transplanted New Yorker who loves living in rural Virginia, but still gets all nostalgic over New York landmarks and events, especially during the holiday season. Would you believe there are TWO Christmas Ball tree ornaments (also on sale) – one is of Rockefeller Center complete with ice skaters, and the other is of the Macy’s Parade. They are replications of artist, Patricia Palermino’s works. I couldn’t resist! And they even come beautifully boxed.
Shopping for the Kiddies
Don’t you love holiday shopping for the young children? It’s what Christmas is really all about. And finding artist-designed, dual purpose gifts that are truly unusual is not an easy task. Well, welcome to the wonderful world of Russell Greenslade Puzzles. This curious kitty being entertained by the antics of a gold fish is full of the bright colors kids love. Cat Fishing is a workable wooden puzzle that doubles as whimsical art in a child’s room. What could be a better gift?
Classic Hunt Scene for a Touch of Class
It looks elegantly expensive and it is or was! But now it’s on sale! I have been secretly looking at this gorgeous Hunt Scene tote and even told the “Old Man” I wanted it for my birthday, but no such luck. And here it is on sale! Did I say that already? Shopping for Xmas? Yes, but can I resist getting the gift instead of giving it? Hmmmm.
More Touches of Class – on a Glass?
Horses – especially running horses – spell sheer elegance – and this set of 4 exquisitely engraved balloon shaped glasses makes an impressive gift, no matter what the season. I’ve added them to my cart. In fact, I’ve added two sets for my brother and family. May even get another set to “have ready” for an as yet, undetermined recipient. Hmmmm
Games of the Past Enhance the Present
Handmade, hand-painted and individually crafted, this spectacular one-of-a-kind Jacks Game Board can still be used to play, but is also a fabulous accent piece. The mellow qualities and meticulous detail in the wood working make this a truly fabulous gift of timeless charm. Do I sound poetic? It’s because I LOVE this Game Board and will be proud to give it because I know it will be cherished. And did I already mention that it’s ON SALE?
Good grief! When I started this prowl, I had no idea of the wealth of surprisingly perfect gifts available. Now if I only had wrapping paper and ribbon I could get everything wrapped in August too! The “Old Man’s” birthday is in August. Maybe we should put up the TREE!
O.K. – Enuf! Suffice to say these gifts and lots more can be found at Virginia Born and Bred and purchased at phenomenal prices. Check for availability by hitting the “Sale” button in the online catalog or stop by the shop in Lexington, Virginia. They are so friendly and helpful, and hey – they keep it cool in August!
